Walden Oaks Park
Walden Oaks Park is located in Downtown Decatur and Henry David Thoreau was the main inspiration. The park was constructed as a place of respite, peace and inspiration for those who live and work in Downtown Decatur. The park's visionaries are Sherrie and Rick Paler. On a fall trip to New England, the Palers visited Walden Pond. They returned with acorns from the pond to start the three oak trees that currently stand guard over the park. Sam Barnett brought the vision to life and created the plan for the "scape" of the park. Rosewood Nursery generously and lovingly spent three years cultivating the oaks, "Henry", "David" and "Thoreau", to stand straight and tall and establish good strong roots. Hannah's Landscaping provided meticulous attention to details and professional installation in completing this project. Two major entities partnered to make this park possible. The Trowlers Garden Club (est February 4, 1948), a long-time partner of the Decatur Downtown Redevelopment Authority. They have generously donated to this project as well as other parks in the downtown area and projects throughout Decatur. The Baker Foundation, another long-time partner of the Redevelopment Authority and contributor to numerous projects throughout Decatur, has shared in the funding of Walden Oaks Park.
