THERAPEUTIC RECREATION
Our Therapeutic Recreation Program offers a variety of inclusive activities and recreation opportunities to individuals with intellectual and/or physical disabilities. The program currently offers day programming, special events and Special Olympics sanctioned sports to the special needs community. The Therapeutic Recreation Program is headquartered at the Aquadome Recreation Center.

Day Programming
The Therapeutic Recreation Program offers daily programming from 9a-12p Monday through Thursday, including Chair Zumba, water aerobics, drum class and BINGO. Offerings rotate throughout the month, so be sure to check the calendar for available classes! All classes are free of charge unless specifically stated.
Water Aerobics
Water aerobics is a fun, low-impact full-body workout that uses the natural resistance of water to improve strength, balance and cardiovascular fitness. Offered by our partners at NARCOG, this class provides a safe, supportive and enjoyable way for participants of all fitness levels to stay active.
BINGO
Our BINGO activity offers a relaxed, welcoming environment for participants to connect, socialize and enjoy classic gameplay. It's a great way to enjoy time, have fun and win prizes.
Zumba
Zumba is an inclusive, high-energy dance fitness class designed for individuals with a wise range of abilities. Led by a trained instructor, this program features simple choreography, upbeat music and flexible movement options so participants can join in at their own pace - standing or seated.
The focus is on fun, confidence and community, making it a great way to build coordination, boost cardio fitness and enjoy expressive movement in a supportive environment.
Movie + Popcorn
Enjoy a family-friendly film in a in a sensory-aware environment. Fresh popcorn is provided and participants are welcome to bring any comfort items or supports they need.
Puzzles & Games
From jigsaw puzzles and brain teasers to board games and group activities, this program offers a fun, relaxed space for participants to challenge their minds, build problem-solving skills and enjoy friendly competition.
This program encourages social interaction, teamwork and creative thinking while providing an enjoyable way to connect with others.
Drum Class
Our Drum Class offers an energetic and engaging introduction to rhythm, percussion and musical expression. Participants learn basic drumming techniques, explore different beats and group skills. No experience is needed - just enthusiasm and a willingness to have fun.
It's a great way to build coordination, boost confidence and enjoy the power of music in a supportive, creative environment.
Special Events
The Therapeutic Recreation Program regularly hosts special events throughout the year, such as holiday parties, dances, etc. Be sure to check the calendar for all upcoming events!
Decatur Parks & Recreation offers multiple sports through Special Olympics which provides individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities the opportunity to participate in year-round sports training and athletic competitions. Athletes of all skill levels can build fitness, develop new skills and enjoy the excitement of friendly competition in a supportive, inclusive environment.
Through participation, athletes gain confidence, teamwork and a sense of accomplishment while connecting with a welcoming community. The program celebrates ability, encourages personal growth and empowers every participant to to reach their full potential.
